My mother never wore anything she didn’t make as a teen; her mother wasadept in traditional Gozitan lace whereas my other grandmother sewed up a storm for herfive-strong brood – who am I to argue with biology? After finishing my Art A-Level, Istudied English Literature, which I feel really influences my work. Having always beeninto all things creative, I went from fanciful doodles and illustrations with a fashiony-leaning in my teens to sewing and embroidery – my way of encompassing my interests inart, fashion and literature.
I took a basic tailoring course a few years ago and started The Secret Rose blog (namedafter a favourite poem by Yeats) documenting my projects a little after. The Secret Rosetends to favour the romantic and feminine with lace, pearls and delicate beading featuringheavily, alongside a fascination with the ornate. My main passion however is quality – togive the customer the best possible item I can provide – and that underlies everything Imake.
Medium: My main drug of choice is embroidery. Beleaguered with a persistentperfectionism and unfailing knack to push beyond my envisioned limits, my embroiderywork gets ever more detailed. Weapons include fabric, ribbon, thread, buttons, pearls, braid etc as well as absolutely anything I deem fit (which really excludes little!).
